Directions from villaBofa is built for slow, sun-soaked days — swimming, lounging and creek-side sunsets. Here's what to do and what you'll find.
Calm, shallow water — best around high tide. Float in the warm Indian Ocean or drift into the creek mouth.
On the public beach, locals rent wooden loungers with thin mattresses for about KSh 100–200 per day. Bargain kindly and tip for shade umbrellas.
Wide sand for towels and umbrellas. Pick a spot near a palm for natural shade through the hottest hours.
Coconut sellers, fresh fruit, roasted cassava, bead jewellery and kikois wander the sand — bring small cash.
Locals often set up football or volleyball nets in the late afternoon — visitors are welcome to join.
Bofa faces west over the creek — the golden-hour walk along the water's edge is the day's highlight.
Bofa is just north of town — four easy ways to get there, on any budget.
Walk north out of Kilifi Club along the creek road, then take the sandy path to Bofa. A pleasant stroll past local homes and palm groves — best in the cool morning or late afternoon.
Taxis wait near Kilifi Club and the town centre. Agree the fare before you get in. Ask the driver to drop you at the Bofa Beach entrance.
Rent a bicycle in town and ride the flat road north to Bofa. Lock up at a beach kiosk. A relaxed, scenic way to come and go.
The fastest, cheapest ride — local motorbike taxis line the main road. Wear the provided helmet and hold on. Ask for 'Bofa Beach'.
Tides shape every beach day in Kilifi. Time your swim for high tide and your walks for low — here's how it works.
Water rises over the sand, the creek fills and swimming is at its best. The beach narrows — claim your spot early. Best for floating, creek swims and dhow trips.
Water retreats, exposing reef, rock pools and creek banks. Great for beach walks, crab spotting and mangrove exploration — but swimming is poor and shallow.
Kilifi has two high and two low tides roughly every 24 hours 50 minutes. Each tide shifts about 50 minutes later than the day before, so check a local tide table for your visit.
Around full and new moon the range is biggest (spring tides) — higher highs, lower lows. Quarter moons bring gentler neap tides with less change between high and low.
Quick tip: the best swimming window is about 1–2 hours either side of high tide. Ask a local or check a Kilifi tide app the night before so you can plan your day.
